The gut microbiome! What the hell is that exactly? Why is it so special? And why do I need to know anything about it?!
Well for starters the gut microbiome is the collection (or collective) of microorganisms (different bacteria) living in your gut (stomach and intestines). While some microorganisms are harmful to our health, many are incredibly beneficial and even necessary to a healthy body. This ecosystem of bacteria is the cornerstone of your immune system.
If your body was an army, your gut microbiome is the infantry front lines of your immune system fighting off unwelcome visitors to the body.
Your microbiome is made up of hundreds of trillions of bacteria that live in our gut/intestines, that outnumber our own cells 10:1. If you weighed this community of bacteria it would weigh more than 2kilograms. Pretty insane!
The job of the microbiome is to crack open the food we eat. From this, they supply the gut with energy, manufacture vitamins, break down toxins and medications and train our immune system. Different bacteria manufacture different substances (acids, gases, fats). Think of bacteria as tiny factories.
Stay tuned for more on the gut microbiome soon.
