The WalkAide system uses sophisticated sensor technology and software and analyses the unique movement of the leg and foot in the individual with foot drop. Based on that analysis, WalkAide creates a unique stimulation pattern for walking which is customised for the individual client.
The WalkAide sends appropriate functional electrical stimulation (FES) to the common peroneal nerve, this stimulation then activates the muscle that lifts up the foot (Tibialis Anterior) at the appropriate time during the gait cycle. Thus, producing a much more natural, efficient and safe pattern of walking.
Benefits
- Fully wireless foot drop system
- Comfortable, small, and discreet
- Easy for most individuals to use, can applied with one hand.
- Can be worn under most clothing
- Reduces the increased effort associated with walking with foot drop by stimulating and controlling foot/ankle alignment
- Does not require orthopaedic footwear or a foot switch so can be worn outside provided there is adequate ankle control
- Great for walking barefeet
- Includes an exercise mode that allows a home-based therapeutic program
- May improve circulation, reduce atrophy, improve control, and increase joint range of motion
- No foot switch needed as it utilizes a Tilt Sensor to control stimulation during normal gait
Indications for use
Individuals with foot drop associated with the following central nervous system conditions may benefit from WalkAide:
- Cerebrovascular accident (Stroke)
- Incomplete spinal cord injury or lesion
- Traumatic brain injury or chronic brain lesion
- Multiple sclerosis with variable fatigue
- Cerebral palsy
- Other upper motor neuron lesions
Your shin needs to be in the same position for the tiltometer to register and deliver an electrical impulse. However if you have variable fatigue, your shin may not be in same alignment and therefore the system may not deliver an electrical impulse from time to time.
